Research: Editing theories of Bordwell, Thompson, Vernallis and Goodwin

In this lesson we learnt about the different editing styles from different theories.

We learnt about Bordwell and Thompson's theory of editing, which referred to four elements of graphic, rhythmic, spatial and temporal. Graphic refers to images on the screen. Rhythmic refers to the beat and tempo of the video image with the beat of the song. Spatial refers to to the setting and the composition of everything in the screen. Temporal refers to editing and the plot of the music video.

We also learnt about Vernaliss' technique and theory for editing music videos. This theory was based on continuity editing and montage editing in music videos. For instance continuity editing has limited shot types, but the editing style aids the narrative, where as montage editing does not have a linear narrative, but is more abstract with the shot types and effects used.

Lastly we learnt about Andrew Goodwin. His theory was on the structure of a usic video. For instance, there is illustration (visual narrative where the image tells the stroy of the lyrics), amplification (is a form of visual narrative that creates new levels of meaning without contradicting the lyrics) and disjuncture (visual narrative that contradicts the lyrics).
